What is Eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition that is also known as atopic dermatitis. It usually shows up as itchy inflamed patches of skin on various parts of the body. It can be anywhere from deep red blotches with lumps and bumps, to smaller discolored patches. Some cases can be extremely severe and cause great pain. Other cases can be mild and only cause a little discomfort. Regardless of the severity of the breakout, any type of skin condition can cause a person to be miserable.
Eczema in itself is merely a description of inflamed, itchy skin. Upon closer observation, a dermatologist may find that the condition is contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, and so on. The question about what can cure it, or what can make it go away depends on why it is present and what the cause of it is.
What Eczema Looks Like
We already discussed that it can be red and bumpy, but skin irritation can come in many forms. Eczema can be very dry and flakey as well. If you have ever experience or saw somebody else that had a bad case of dandruff you can see that flakes of the skin falling off. Not that dandruff is eczema, but it can be in some places.
Eczema can show up anywhere on the body but it most commonly affects the back of the knees, the elbows, the arms, and even the face. It is not contagious so it is not spread, but it can look really ugly. For some people, aging seems to be a factor that either makes it worse or less severe.
- Red or brown patches
- Raised bumps that ooze with fluid
- Crusty yellow dried up puss
- Thick and scaly skin
What Causes Eczema
As for a definitive cause of eczema, there is still a lot left to be learned. Many doctors believe that it can come from internal issues such as poor diet, or even diet allergies that cause an autoimmune response in the body’s immune system. Things like leaky gut syndrome and other dietary issues can cause problems with the skin as well.
Some people even react physically to mental states such as stress or nervousness. Severe cases of stress can often result in hives that look much like eczema.
Eczema can flare up for people during certain times as well, for example when they sweat, or when they wear clothing that has chemicals in them that cause a reaction.
Eczema, although has many forms and contributing factors, has one common denominator: it affects the skin and causes problems.
